New report on Open Science and societal engagement in research

The European Commission has recently published the new report “Enabling open science and societal engagement in research” which provides recommendations on how open science and societal engagement could become the norm in research performing organisations across the European Research Area. The report builds upon the insights gathered during a workshop organized by the European Commission attended by beneficiaries of 36 Science with and for Society (SwafS) projects working on institutional changes, including TIME4CS.

The report outlined 5 key recommendations for reforms to be made in the European Research Area:

  1. Universities and other RPOs should better reward Open Science practices (including citizens and civil society engagement in R&I) in the recruitment and assessment procedures of researchers.

  2. Open science should be institutionalized in universities and other RPOs.

  3. The development of new indicators, measures and procedure for a better assessment of Open Science practices, including the extent to which civil society organizations and citizens have been engaged in R&I related projects, should continue to be ensured.

  4. Criteria, metric and methods that underpin research proposal evaluation processes should be improved.

  5. Open science practices should be considered within universities rankings systems.
