What transformations are needed for research institutes to support citizen science?
On the 27th of June 2023, we held an online webinar dedicated to exploring the lessons learned from a range of institutions and their experiences, from the symposium on the topic at the CSA’s C*Sci conference in May 2023, and from webinar participants on the day.
Participants had the opportunity to hear about and discuss potential strategies for embedding citizen science within institutions and could also share their own experiences and contribute to the creation of a resource to share possible pathways to integrate activities to promote and embed citizen science in research performing organisations (RPOs), hopefully supporting this often difficult process.
The webinar was a combined effort of the TIME4CS and INCENTIVE projects.
Opening research to society in Horizon Europe. How to set up citizen science projects?
Hosted on the 8th of June, this webinar provided participants with an overview of citizen science as part of the Open Science strategy and presented how citizen science projects are set up within that framework.
Participants had the opportunity to interact with speakers and get first-hand information on how to effectively integrate citizen science in research methodology and what aspects to take into account in the proposal development.
This webinar was a combined effort of the TIME4CS, INCENTIVE and ECS projects. Here you can find the presentations from our great speakers:
Claudia Iasillo, from TIME4CS;
Claudia Fabó Cartas, from ECSA;
Beatriz Noriega Ortega, from ECSA.
Monitoring and evaluating the impact of Citizen Science Hubs (CSHs)
On the 30th of May 2023, we held an online webinar dedicated to aspects of monitoring and evaluating the impact of Citizen Science Hubs, including (i) a step-by-step approach to how to create an M&E framework to assess the impact of the Hubs; (ii) an evaluation approach to monitor and evaluate the impact of the institutional changes made by Research Performing Organisations that aim to lead to a better and more effective engagement of citizens in research. Furthermore, (iii) a guest speaker from the MICS project guided the participants through the MICS impact assessment tool and its utilities.
This webinar was a combined effort of the TIME4CS and INCENTIVE projects.
Ethical aspects of Citizen Science: good practices and institutional interventions
Hosted on the 16th of May, this webinar provided participants with a specific Citizen Science (CS) case study, which implied different levels of ethical and legal challenges, including GDPR compliance and various ethics dimension (i.e. research integrity, gender perspective, open access, public engagement, etc.).
As part of the webinar, JoinUs4Health presented the project's methodology and the case study as a whole, highlighting the most sensitive aspects of its implementation to focus the participants’ attention on the needed interventions.
ETHNA System then presented its flexible ethical governance system, illustrating its optimal composition for the chosen case: which “columns” should be considered (code of ethics and good practices, ethics committee on R&I, ethics line) and which building brick to be implemented (research integrity, gender perspective, public engagement, open access), according to the issues raised by the case study as well as the institutional commitment and capabilities of the hosting organisation in these terms.

Citizen Science in the dialogue between Science and Society
On the 27th of April 2023, we held an online webinar with the aim to explore how dialogical and participatory communication, where all parties are actively involved, is strategic both for research and for society. In case you missed it, here you can find the presentations from our great speakers:
Driving changes to embed Citizen Science at your institution
On 6th of December 2022 we held an online interactive workshop with the aim of teaching attendees how they can contribute to fostering the adoption of citizen science as research methodology within their organisation through the use of institutional roadmaps. The Citizen Science Funding Landscape
Hosted on the 9th of March 2023 , this webinar provided participants with an overview of different funding opportunities for Citizen Science projects. The event consisted of a discussion with representatives of different funding sources at local, national and international level to discuss similarities and highlight specificities between the different approaches.
