29 recommendations on how to institutionalise Citizen Science in your institution

What action do institutions need to take to successfully embed Citizen Science and Public Engagement? That question was the core of a workshop series we held in autumn 2021. The Front-Runners – institutions with previous experience in Citizen Science – thereby shared best practices and practical suggestions that are crucial for any institution aiming at institutionalising Citizen Science.

Based on the outcomes of these workshops, which are detailed in the Report on TIME4CS Knowledge Transfer from Front-Runers to Implementers (D3.4), we derived 29 best practices and summarized them in form of easy-to-remember recommendations. They all provide actionable advice for successful institutional adoption of Citizen Science in the four so-called “Intervention Areas” which are Research, Education and Awareness, Support Resources and Infrastructure, and Policy and Assessment.

The recommendations were at the base of the social media campaign #AskTheExpert that ran from April through May 2022 on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook . For the campaign we created individual and visually appealing cards for each recommendation. To see all recommendations at a glance, see the image below or access this document.
